I personally used to base the value of a blog upon the number of comments until I realized some of the best blogs are the ones with not a lot of comments but a steady number of readers. I love blogs that make me think and honestly have me captivated by the way they describe their life.

I blog because I need an outlet. Life is tricky and sometimes it can really help just to unleash your words out into cyberspace because maybe there is someone out there that can relate and maybe there isn't but the unleashing of emotions is what makes me feel better. I do not have a large reader base and honestly could care less.

I do enjoy reading your blog because I feel like when I read I am reading your honest thoughts and opinions, not just something that will gain more readers. I thoroughly admire that about a blogger.

I get deterred from blogging because no one reads it, and I'll admit that I need to stop doing this. I need to realize that it's much more like a diary than a place where I want a large following.

I blog mainly for myself. I don't have much for "content' and my blog may not be interesting to some people. But to me it makes all the difference in the world when I am having a bad day and either have no one to talk to or don't feel like sharing with my friends and family (though most of them know my website by now anyways). I find when I go to someones website they can have all the content in the world and honestly if their blog doesn't catch my eye or something doesn't jump out at me in what they are writing on their first page I generally don't stay. For me blogging is my way of getting my frustrations out. Or sharing my triumphs. I guess I look for that in other peoples blogs too.

I blog for so many reasons. I love to write. I love to tell the story about my life and get out all my thoughts. The main part that I love about it, though, is being a part of a community. I've made so many awesome friends in the blogging community and I think that allowing them into my life has been a big part of why I love blogging. Seeing what they think about what I have to say and also seeing what I have in common with people and relating to them in so many ways has helped me through different phases in my life and I'll always want to blog for that reason alone, if for nothing else.

I think a lot of people do get lost... I know I did at one point. I kept thinking "Oh no, I've got to apologise for not blogging again!" but more recently I've just been treating my blog like what it is - a personal diary of sorts, which just happens to be in the public domain. People can comment or they can not comment - it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It's always so much nicer to read a blog which you know is just a stream of words from the writer's mind, rather than something which has been constructed or thought out in such a way as to gain more readers/attention etc.

For me it's changed a lot - I blogged because I wanted to get my feelings out and let off some steam, then I started to enjoy the comments and blog FOR the readers, and now I'm back to blogging for myself. It excites me to think I'll be able to look back in a year and see what I was up to. I hate blogs being too commercial with adverts cluttering the page, and sponsored posts every other day - I just don't see the point of it to be honest which is why I'll never do it.

"but now I realize that my blog isn’t here to entertain the masses" - and this is what I try to get people to realize. Unless you set out with a base of fans/followers and a mission to entertain them, enlighten them, etc. you are going to be struggling to not only find something to write about but you will get overwhelmed and disappointed by the hunt for followers and advertisements for your blog.

People get frustrated because they feel like they have to write for an audience. Not so! A personal blog is just that: personal. Share whatever the hell you feel like. But people get lost along the way because their idea of a "good blog" tends to be one with a lot of followers and a specific subject.

Really, unless someone is getting paid to do it... just do it for the fun of it.

This is exactly the question I've been asking myself for the longest time: why do I blog? Or rather, why I used to blog. this was a really eye-opening post, as well as thoight provoking. Thanks!
