The Future Is Not Promised But The Present Is

Aug 24, 2010
the-future-is-not-promised-but-the-present-is

Ever since I was chosen for this week’s topic on Daydreamz’s WeBlogIt, I’ve been trying to come up with a reasonable answer to something I’m looking forward to in the future. Despite my attempts to be witty or sarcastic or even remotely interesting, I found that when it boils down to it the future while full of wonder and awe is just not predictable.

Answering the prompt I would say what I look forward to most is the Salt River Tubing trip the weekend of Labor Day. I had a wonderful time last weekend and I realized just how much I miss just going out and enjoying the day with friends. I know it’s far from grandiose and maybe not such a life altering event, but as I grow older I learn that the little things are what seem to mean the most and generally result in the best times.

The future is not promised and as much as we’d like to think that it is for certain things, marriage, friendships—deep down we know that is naïve. So what can we do instead? Enjoy the present and the moments we share with those we love in the process. No one can know for certain what the future can hold, but I know that I’m not going to spend a lifetime worrying about the what ifs. Instead I’m going to spend my life focusing on the here and the now, because after all in the long run that’s all that matters.

[Guest Post] Desperate Housewives Not So Desperate

Aug 24, 2010
guest-post-desperate-housewives-not-so-desperate

Thank you Trent Horton for your views on Desperate Housewives.

For the first couple of years, I avoided Desperate Housewives, since I saw it as a smutty show with little redeeming value. However, once I began watching it on direct tv hd, I found that there were many positive aspects to outweigh the negative.

Some of the characters on the series are indeed shallow, especially Eva Longoria’s Gabrielle, and every time you turn around there is a seedy affair of some kind going on. But many of these characters have families, and they care about them deeply, whatever their other faults are. Among the most interesting characters are Susan, who is played by Teri Hatcher of “Lois and Clark”, and Lynette, who is portrayed by Felicity Huffman.

Susan is a woman who finds true love in the form of blue-collar Mike, but there are many rocky paths to their happiness. Lynette, initially the frumpiest of the housewives, has to deal with a house full of rambunctious kids with a special talent for irritating their neighbor, the amusingly cantankerous Mrs. McCluskey, portrayed by Kathryn Joosten, who twice won an Emmy for playing the character.

My favorite of all the episodes was the 100th, in which Beau Bridges guest starred as a handyman who gently intervened in the lives of each of the major characters, changing them for the better. This episode alone made me regard it as a much deeper show.

Technology Has So Many Options That Sometimes It’s Overwhelming

Aug 23, 2010
technology-has-so-many-options-that-sometimes-its-overwhelming

I’ve always been really interested in learning about Cisco given that I do eventually want to break out into the technological field and I know it is something that a lot of businesses use. One of the suggestions I’ve received is to try and get my CCNA (cisco certified network associate) certification but I haven’t really had the time to look in to it and research.

I decided instead to do a Google search to see what populated and I came upon results about CCNA training and CCNA boot camp. It seems like a good idea, but obviously the main concern is going to be cost. As much as I’d love to get my certification, I can’t justify something that cost so much when I don’t expect to really dive into the tech field for a few years.

For those of you who actually have your certification as a Cisco certified network associate, how did you obtain it? Did you go through training or boot camp and if so what was the overall cost to you and did you think it was worth it; for those who didn’t go that route, which route did you take and why? What were the advantages and disadvantages of it?

Maybe In The Distant Future, Things Will Change

Aug 23, 2010

One of the problems Robby and I had when it came to the iPhone and AT&T is that iphone insurance was not available through the carrier. I’m sorry but at the time we weren’t willing to commit to spending over $600 on a phone without the possibility of insuring it.

Now sure it is true we had the option to find another means to insure it, but you would think such a high profile item would be something that the carrier would want to insure, which wasn’t the case. However, even despite the insurance, originally that wasn’t the reason we shied away to begin with. After testing it out from, I realized I could not for the life of me stand the keyboard and so I had no interest in the phone at all.

Flash forward to a few years letter when it seems Apple has finally gotten their act together and made a phone that is useable. I tried it, loved it, and sought out my own, but ultimately ended up switching to a MyTouch because of the fact that my version was unlocked and jailbroken and I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t utilize 3G.

Here’s to hoping that eventually Apple will expand the list of carriers they currently have and maybe, maybe then I’ll consider going back.

Somehow When I’m With You, I Never Get Burned

Aug 23, 2010
somehow-when-im-with-you-i-never-get-burned

If I’m truly honest with myself, which I admit I have the tendency not to be– I’m depressed. I’m not unhappy with my life per say, but I guess finding out that there are more than two couples in our lives, one of which’s wedding we attended a few months before ours, are going through a divorce is a downer. It hits me hard. Harder than I thought possible, but I guess it’s like a constant reminder of what I almost lost. What we almost lost.

I’m trying not to let it affect me. Trying to barrel through and let it roll off me, but it’s not easy. For most who know me they know that I’m not gun hoe about marriage and never was (thank you mom and dad). In fact I wasn’t the one who wanted to get married or even broached the subject of marriage first; Robby was. And I’m not saying I regret it or that I didn’t want it because I don’t and I definitely did (otherwise I wouldn’t have said I do) but seeing the people in my life who’s weddings I went to or people close to me decide it’s just not working; well a piece of me breaks because honestly that could be us or anyone for that matter. Nothing is promised, as much as we’d like to think otherwise, but I’m not naive.

I know I shouldn’t be afraid, that I should not have doubts or be fearful that we may end up on that same windy path, but I can’t help it. It’s just one of those things that you can’t help let affect you, because it tends to make you realize that even the ones you thought would last forever are often the ones who don’t.

All in all it’s been a very emotional month, especially for an empath who tends to feel more even when those actually involved, don’t feel anything. My heart aches for what was loss but I of all people know that staying in a relationship that you’re unhappy with isn’t right and isn’t fair to the other party. I just hope that whatever happens to be in the water for the month of August skips us, because while I’m quite certain we won’t be walking down that path yet and if I have my way, never, there’s always going to be that what if and that’s what scares me most.
